WELSH SLATE HELPS CRICKET CLUB WITH A LEG BEFORE WATER
20 August 2021
Members of Welsh Slate’s local cricket club will soon be back scoring runs with dry feet, thanks in part to the company.
The manufacturer of natural slate products has donated 20 tonnes of aggregate for a soakaway drain to mitigate the cricket field becoming waterlogged and ruling out play.
The drainage system on the field had become so ineffective over the past few years that an increasing number of matches and training sessions had to be cancelled due to waterlogging. This meant players were denied the opportunity of recreational sport and exercise at a vital community hub. The club itself also experienced a loss of income from the bar and catering service.
As the 2020 season was cancelled entirely due to Covid, the club took the opportunity to install a drainage channel to improve the speed at which the ground drains of rainwater.
Bethesda Cricket Club runs senior men’s and women’s sides as well as junior girls and boys teams from the under 9s to under 15s but has very limited funds and relies almost entirely on voluntary work, so Welsh Slate’s donation of material to backfill the drainage channel was very welcome and has been commemorated with an advertising board at the ground.
Bethesda Cricket Club chairman Dewi Roberts said: “We are very grateful for the generosity of Welsh Slate in providing us with the material to be able to complete our project and contribute towards improving our facility that will benefit all members of the community.”
