WELSH SLATE HELPS AN AMBITIOUS SUSTAINABILITY CHAMPION
22 March 2022
A Masters undergraduate and budding entrepreneur is being helped by Welsh Slate to start her own business repurposing natural slate bi-product.
Product designer Llinos Bolton, who has recently finished a Masters degree in ceramics at Cardiff Metropolitan University and who previously worked in one of the UK’s top design Agencies in North Wales, is being supplied with a slate bi-product from the company’s main Penrhyn Quarry.
As part of her course, Llinos had been working on a project to recycle the bi-product to produce a wide variety of kiln-fired objects with a multitude of functions.
She is now creating her own sustainable ceramic brand and business, with the ambition to specifically work with slate bi-product … and Welsh Slate has stepped in to help her spread her wings.
Llinos, who hails from the North Wales village of Bethesda where Welsh Slate’s Penrhyn Quarry is located, said she was keen to create an even more sustainable product in collaboration with the manufacturer of natural slate for roofing, hard landscaping and architectural applications including cladding, flooring, paving and work surfaces.
She added: “Being local, I am aware of the amount of bi product produced in quarrying slate, and I have always been interested in exploring ways it could be used in alternative avenues. Slate is globally known as a desirable material, and I want to expand its potential and possibilities even further.”
