Welsh Slate advises local children about quarry safety
As the season for wild swimming and outdoor adventures approaches, Welsh Slate has taken the opportunity to advise local schoolchildren of quarry safety.
As part of its link-up with Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen, the secondary school in Bethesda where its main Penrhyn quarry is located, works manager Rob Maurice-Jones and operations manager Penrhyn Mike Ford presented to Years 7, 8 and 9 about the hazards to look out for.
These included remoteness, cliffs, deep water, cold water, cold water shock, heavy machinery, rock falls, dust, stockpiles and tips.
The presentation was part of Welsh Slate’s involvement in Careers Wales’ programme, School Valued Partner, where a school partners with a local employer to work together on careers and the world of work.
The first activity, in November, was a presentation to Year 11 students about the scope of job roles within the company and training opportunities for the future, including the apprenticeship and graduate schemes.
