WAR MEMORIAL PROJECT WINS WELSH SLATE SUPPORT
25 November 2021
Welsh Slate is supporting a ground-breaking project to promote, using QR codes, the history of Wales.
The company has contributed to HistoryPoints to provide a plaque at the First World War memorial which commemorates 24 fallen former employees of its Blaenau Ffestiniog quarry. Oakeley war memorial page
The quarry was in its time the largest underground slate mine in the world, with 26 floors spanning a vertical height of nearly 1,500 feet. Its war memorial is one of more than 170 in Wales where HistoryPoints QR codes are available.
The project has produced QR codes for display at 2,000 places in Wales, for the public to receive on-the-spot history of each object or place on their mobiles. All of the information is free of charge and available on the historypoints.org website.
The QR codes at war memorials enable visitors to read much more than just a list of names. They provide summaries including date of death, age, rank, regiment, next of kin and local address, and where the project has photos and biographical information of the individuals, it creates web pages in memory of the people.
