WELSH SLATE AND BREEDON STOP STORM BERT RAINING ON ALDI'S PARADE
16 May 2025
Aggregates from Welsh Slate and Breedon, and a workforce from Breedon’s Surfacing Solutions, join forces for Aldi.
Construction aggregates from Welsh Slate and parent group Breedon helped a new Aldi in a Welsh valley open on time, even after one of the wettest weekends in recent times.
Some 3,000 tonnes of permeable Type 1X from Welsh Slate’s Penrhyn Quarry and 350 tonnes of 100/200mm gabion stone from Breedon’s Minffordd Quarry and Asphalt Plant were used at the new Aldi in Pwllheli over nine months by main contractor Jennings Building and Civil Engineering.
Jennings completed the groundworks package and S278 works for the supermarket, using the Type 1X as the sub-base for the permeable road and car park design. Due to its valley location, this system allows water to pass more easily through to the perforated drainage underneath. The gabion stone was used as the infill for the gabion basket retaining wall.
The main contractor also sub-contracted Breedon’s Surfacing Solutions business to lay 2,000 tonnes of permeable asphalt from the Minffordd Quarry on the site’s roads, car park and footpaths, just before Storm Bert hit the area.
Jennings’ buyer Jason Hubball said: “The quality of the aggregates and service from Breedon was excellent. All the work at Pwllheli was caried out to the same high quality and our client was very happy with the end result.”
John Roberts, territory sales manager at Breedon said: “After one of the wettest weekends of the year, the newly-constructed porous-design car park passed with flying colours. Storm Bert 0, Porous 1!”
Jason added: “Jennings have always had a good historic relationship with Breedon who are one of our biggest suppliers of aggregate, ready-mix concrete and asphalt materials for our sites across North Wales and north-west England. Breedon always supply high-quality material from their quarries and batching plants, ensuring that our groundwork foundations are of the high standard that we adhere to."
“Breedon’s territory sales manager, John Roberts, has provided an excellent level of customer service. His close liaison with Jennings ensures that all of our aggregate requirements are met with no disruption to programme. Because of their material quality and exceptional service, Breedon is a highly regarded aggregate supplier of Jennings.”
