Welsh Slate Face Finishes For Walling

The walling finishes available include Pillared, Rustic, Sawn and Cleaved while the colours are Penrhyn Heather and Cwt-y-Bugail Dark Blue Grey.

Pillared Walling

Pillared walling is generally random lengths/random heights, 100mm on bed, with faces  hand crafted using a chisel and mallet in the aged traditional way. The finish is a ribbed texture with sawn ends and. Tops and bottom of shows the cleft properties of the slate.

Pillared walling – slate has two workable planes: a cleavage plane and a pillaring line. The pillaring line is similar to the grain in a piece of wood. In good-quality slate, the pillaring line is at 90° to the cleavage plane. Pillared walling is usually produced with a pillared face. The back can be pillared, sawn or gauged.

Rustic walling

Rustic walling is generally random lengths/random heights, 100mm on bed. The bed is controlled by sawing the backs of the stone giving possibilities to show both sawn and rustic combinations.

Faces are natural showing the background colour of the stone which often has shades of a rustic tint. The ends are left natural

Rustic walling quarried and manufactured from rustic bed seamss generally gives a rugged natural finish, which is graded and selected to enhance its natural look and usually requires laying by a skilled stonemason.

Available in Penrhyn Heather and Cwt-y-Bugail Dark Blue Grey

Sawn Walling

Sawn walling generally random lengths/random heights,100mm on bed, the bed width is controlled by sawing the backs of the stone.

The faces and ends show the sawn effect of processing with the tops and bottom having a cleft/split character.  Sawn walling effect gives a lighter variation of the natural colour of the material when dry but is enhanced when wet.

Sawn walling is produced to higher tolerances, making it easier to lay, and can be fixed with tighter joint lines than traditional stone walling.

Sawn walling can be specified in bespoke applications

Available in Penrhyn Heather and Cwt-y-Bugail Dark Blue Grey

Cleaved walling

Cleaved walling faces are hand crafted using a chisel and mallet in the aged traditional way of splitting. The finish is a lightly textured riven surface similar to a roofing slate, with the ends, tops and bottoms sawn.

As the height is controlled by sawing this walling is often specified as random lengths with specific heights but generally 100mm on bed width.

Cleaved walling is used in either fixed or patterned course heights as any adjustments must be cut with diamond blades.

Available in Penrhyn Heather and Cwt-y-Bugail Dark Blue Grey

Gabions Baskets

All our finishes and colours can be used as facing for Gabion baskets.  Generally, our walling is only applied to the seen facing element of the gabion with alternative less aesthetically looking materials used for the bulk.
