Cwt-y-Bugail Slate Quarry

The Cwt-y-Bugail slate quarry in Ffestiniog, North Wales has been producing slates from 1840, and is currently the highest industrial site in the UK.

Cwt-y-Bugail is now an open cast quarry although originally the quarry was mined. During World War 2, many of Britain’s most valuable paintings were secretly stored in its caverns for safe-keeping!
