Unwin’s Stores is considered to be of exceptional State heritage significance as probably the longest continuously occupied row of shops in Sydney.
Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority has undertaken a conservation project at Unwin’s Stores to ensure its long-term preservation.
The works include reconstructing the original slate roof with Welsh Slate, reconstructing some windows and skylights, repairing gutters and downpipes, removing paint in the facade to reveal the original sandstone, and stabilising the walls, roof and chimney.
Work was due to be completed in December 2012 after five months, with slate supplied by Premier Slate in Sydney.
To minimise any disturbance for visitors, residents and businesses, work was restricted to specific periods – Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm and Saturdays 7am to 12noon.
