Welsh//Slate is committed to conducting our business in an environmentally responsible manner. We accept that we have a responsibility to maximise the environmental benefits, to minimise the environmental impact and to promote sustainable development within our operations and the services we provide.
Our commitment is to:-
- Continually improving our performance, setting objectives and targets as part of our overall business strategy, including promotion of sustainable resources into our operations, focusing on use of materials, reducing energy usage, re-using waste and maximising recycling opportunities.
- Complying with relevant legislation and where practical, with codes or practice, industrial standards and other requirements, such as those specified by our clients.
- Maintaining management systems which are certified to ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental Management Systems).
- Ensuring environmental impact is assessed throughout the operations and services provided to prevent pollution, minimise impact and consider opportunities for improvement.
- Providing sufficient resources and appropriate training to manage our impacts effectively.
Welsh//Slate is totally committed to restoring and remodelling landscapes that are affected by quarrying. With this aim we operate a joint venture, The Ecology Company, with Cynefin Environmental Consultants. Exceptionally high environmental performance standards have been achieved through development programmes that use natural materials and processes to recreate the unique character of each site.
100% of slate quarried (excluding overburden) is manufactured into saleable products – roofing slate, architectural products and aggregates. Slate roofing has lower embedded carbon (kg Co2/m2) than cement or clay tiles.
UK manufactured roofing slate has a lower carbon footprint than imported roofing slates.
Welsh Slate Limited have reduced their Co2 emissions by 23% in the past year through investment.
